Ray White Real Estate Australia  chairman Brian White says several prime urban sites are ripe for development, at a time when the nation is experiencing surging migration growth, major housing supply shortages and low building approval levels.

"There's very little communication between the different levels of government in really creating sustainability visions for our cities," Mr White told AAP.

"The Prime Minister's talked about doing this in recent days, but we've heard this talk before."

All Australian states and territories will have 30-year infrastructure and land use plans in place by 2012, under an agreement reached at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Brisbane last week.
